I was inspired to paint this after a stroll in Gamla Stan, Stockholm last summer. Wandering aimlessly along the winding streets is always a pleasure, you always find something that you hadn’t noticed before. If you shut your eyes, you become more aware of the sounds and smells sometimes hidden in the background. You also feel the heat hitting your shoulders and top of your head, plus through your eyelids you sense the light and shade.
As the narrow lanes in Gamla Stan are not easily passable by cars, you lose the constant buzz of traffic noise and instead just a quiet background babble of voices and scrapes of chair legs in restaurants and in the distance screaming seagulls. There is a certain smell to older Cities in summer; of hot dust on the cobbles, melted ice-creams and the aroma of onions frying. I wanted to create the feel of this in my painting, to feel not only the colors of the buildings, but also the background flavor of scents and sounds.
